Sources
[edit]This article needs more sources. At the moment the article cannot be relied upon as it appears to be a mix of editorial opinion and factual statements that may or may not be true. The editorial opinion needs to be cut out, and the factual statements need citing - if they cannot be cited they also need to be removed. Opinion statements such as "Fans familiar with the band's U.S. chart singles are often unaware of how loud and aggressive the early Pretenders could be, and how experimental some of their early recordings were." need to be cited to a reliable source or removed. Pretenders, not 'The Pretenders'
[edit]This band is called 'Pretenders', not 'The Pretenders'. Every album cover has simply 'Pretenders' as the band name. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Ianbrettcooper (talk • contribs) 21:27, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
- Clearly not true. The band's own website is ThePretenders.com. They have an album out called The Pretenders iTunes Originals. 71.236.185.15 (talk) —Preceding undated comment added 23:10, 9 February 2010 (UTC).
- Depends on the album, whatever name the album has is most likely the name they will tour with. The original band was "Pretenders", but they kinda changed it around after pete and jimmy died. But now it seems to be "Pretenders". The fans know this, they just put the "The" in there cause it would ocnfuse the rest of the people. 66.241.184.218 (talk) 05:48, 23 July 2010 (UTC)
- There's certainly some ambiguity here. For instance "Learning To Crawl" clearly has The Pretenders, in giant letters, in fact. But it does seem that simply "Pretenders" is the original and preferred name. HandsOfBlue (talk) 14:36, 19 February 2012 (UTC)
- Looking through their discography, it would appear that only the first two albums after the demise of the original line-up prefixed Pretenders with The. To my mind they are the Pretenders rather than The Pretenders, however, if Ms Hynde isn't too fussed, neither am I. Gwladys24 (talk) 19:06, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
- Further to the reference to itunes, above, I notice that the artwork for the two albums I referenced in my previous comment, Learning to Crawl & Get Close, has been amended to remove the prefix from the cover so that they both now just read as Pretenders. This seems consistent with the artwork for the 2007 remasters. Gwladys24 (talk) 21:29, 23 February 2014 (UTC)
- I agree that it should be Pretenders, considering most albums omit the article. The Mo-Ja'al (talk) 23:11, 29 August 2020 (UTC)
- (the) Pet Shop Boys are listed/referred to as Pet Shop Boys on here so the same kind of naming format should apply to this band esp. if most albums are credited to Pretenders rather than The Pretenders (I wouldn't go off what the website is called as somebody else may have got to pretenders.com before them) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 81.152.238.174 (talk) 16:19, 15 December 2020 (UTC)
- Both MusicBrainz and AllMusic agree that the band name is "Pretenders". MusicBrainz shows "Pretenders, The" as an alias.

I would say that it is officially written as Pretenders, but said as The Pretenders. Wolf O'Donnel (talk) 01:01, 13 March 2021 (UTC)
I agree that 'Pretenders" is correct. The text is updated accordingly Billsmith60 (talk) 19:41, 18 October 2022 (UTC)
- It seems like someone changed the title to The Pretenders again. They’ve released an album in 2023 as Pretenders, confirming again the correct, current name. Noattention (talk) 21:56, 15 March 2024 (UTC)
Too Much Personal Opinion
[edit]"The subsequent tour (with an added keyboard player) successfully demonstrated Martin Chambers's forceful drumming."
This reads like a review and smacks of justification for the following statement that "Hynde declared that Chambers was no longer playing well and dismissed him". Simply saying that "I saw so-and-so in concert and thought they were great" is clearly POV and inappropriate. 92.234.48.114 (talk) 14:51, 6 June 2010 (UTC)
- Agreed, and the worst of it has been cropped. The article was also woefully short of references, which I have tried to partly put right. It still needs more cites and less fancruft to progress in the correct manner.
Past Members
[edit]I'm not sure by which form of logic Paul Carrack & Andrew Bodnar are considered past members & yet Billy Bremner & Tony Butler are not. Gwladys24 (talk) 22:58, 17 October 2012 (UTC)
I know another member that’s not listed :) Phoebe h15 (talk) 10:58, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
Tony hayes is a past member too
Phoebe h15 (talk) 11:00, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
He’s left the band because of my dad and he didn’t want to leave him Phoebe h15 (talk) 11:05, 23 August 2020 (UTC)
Hereford?
[edit]The Early Years section seems to show a series of events in London leading to the formation of the Pretenders - no mention of Hereford. If the town of Hereford is indeed the location of the original formation of this band then it would be good to have some mention as to where it fits into the chronological series of events already outlined. Gwladys24 (talk) 17:24, 27 February 2014 (UTC)
- The band were from Hereford, except Hynde, who was not. Chaosdruid (talk) 02:31, 25 November 2020 (UTC)
Regrouping
[edit]"Hynde had a daughter with Ray Davies during January 1983, the "kid" mentioned in the song." Really? The song was released in 1979. O0drogue0o (talk) 08:34, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
- Ok, never mind—that was just confusing, since they had a song by that title beforeO0drogue0o (talk) 08:37, 9 April 2014 (UTC)
Bobby Peterson
[edit]Is Bobby Peterson an actual person, or just a character from the Simpsons? He's listed in the box as being a past member, but not mentioned anywhere in the article. 10thdayoftheweek (talk) 03:30, 3 August 2014 (UTC)
Pretenders UK
[edit]I recall back in late '80s when I saw them at Oakland Coliseum with U2, the band was billed as "The Pretenders UK", which was a result of a conflict with another band. That would be a good addition to this article if someone can find the sources. —howcheng {chat} 16:28, 11 August 2017 (UTC)
Unsourced material
[edit]The article contains a good deal of unsourced material and has been tagged accordingly. SunCrow (talk) 23:03, 27 August 2019 (UTC)
14 Sep 2014 Performance
[edit]The 14 Sep 2014 performance was billed as Chrissie Hynde[1], not the Pretenders, so I've removed it from the article. NE Ent 11:04, 15 January 2020 (UTC)
